Privacy Policy

Last updated: November 12, 2025

Opal (“we,” “our,” or “us”) is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use Opal, a fully offline diary mobile application (“the App”).

Please read this privacy policy carefully. By using Opal, you agree to the terms of this Privacy Policy.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Personal Data

We collect NO personal data, identifiers, or private information.

Opal is designed to function entirely offline on your device. All diary entries, notes, photos, and any other content you create are stored locally on your device only — unless you choose to store them directly in your personal iCloud Drive (see Section 2.1).

We do not collect, store, transmit, or access:

  • Your name, email, phone number, or any personal identifiers
  • Geolocation data
  • User-generated content (diary entries, text, images, attachments)
  • Any third-party account information

1.2 Anonymous Telemetry Data

To improve app performance and track errors, we collect anonymous telemetry data using PostHog. This data includes:

  • Usage data: App interactions and feature usage patterns
  • Page views: Which screens are accessed within the app

Important:

  • All telemetry data is completely anonymous and cannot be related to any specific user
  • We do not collect user-generated content or geolocation data
  • Data is used solely for monitoring app performance and error tracking
  • This data is never sold or shared with third parties
  • You can opt out of telemetry collection at any time in the Settings page

2. How We Handle Your Data

Opal does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data or user-generated content to our servers or third parties.

By default, all diary content is stored locally on your device.

The only data transmitted is anonymous telemetry (as described in Section 1.2) for app performance monitoring and error tracking, which you can opt out of at any time.

2.1 Optional Storage in Your Personal iCloud Drive

You may choose to store your diary entries directly in your own iCloud Drive (instead of or in addition to local storage).

Important:

  • This is an optional, user-selected setting
  • Data is saved directly from your device to your personal iCloud account
  • We do not have access to your iCloud account, files, or stored data
  • We do not store, process, monitor, or back up your diary entries
  • No analytics or tracking occurs during storage
  • Your iCloud credentials are never requested or stored by Opal

This is equivalent to saving a note directly into a folder in your own cloud drive — your data, your iCloud, your control.

3. Third-Party Services

3.1 PostHog Analytics

We use PostHog to collect anonymous telemetry data for app performance monitoring and error tracking purposes only. This data is:

  • Completely anonymous and cannot be linked to any individual user
  • Limited to usage patterns and page views
  • Never sold or shared with third parties
  • Used exclusively to improve app stability and performance

You can opt out of this data collection at any time through the app’s Settings page.

3.2 What We Do NOT Use

Opal does not use:

  • Advertising networks
  • Social media plugins
  • Any third-party services that collect personal data

There are no ads and no personal data sharing.

4. Children’s Privacy

Opal does not knowingly collect any personal information from children under 13. The only data collected is anonymous telemetry that cannot be linked to any individual user. Because no personal data or user-generated content is collected, the app is safe for all ages. However, parents should supervise app usage as diary content may be stored locally or in the child’s iCloud account.

5. Data Security

  • Local storage: Protected by your device’s security (passcode, Face ID, etc.)
  • iCloud storage (if enabled): Protected by Apple’s iCloud security and your Apple ID credentials

We have no access to your data in either case and cannot recover it if your device is lost or reset.

6. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make changes, we will notify you by updating the “Last Updated” date at the top of this policy.

Continued use of Opal after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
