How to enable

Enable Apple Intelligence on your iPhone

Go to Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri and turn on Apple Intelligence. If you don't see this option, your device may not meet the requirements above.

Open Opal and go to Settings

Tap the settings icon in Opal and navigate to AI Weekly Summary.

Select Apple Intelligence as your provider

Choose Apple Intelligence from the provider list. No key needed — Opal will use your device's on-device model automatically.

Generate your first summary

Tap Generate Weekly Summary. Your summary is created privately on your device in seconds.

Or use a third-party AI provider

If your device doesn't support Apple Intelligence, or you prefer a different model, you can connect any of the providers below using a personal API key. Your key is stored securely in iOS Keychain and sent directly to the provider — never to our servers.

Create a developer account

Go to console.anthropic.com and click Start Building. Note: a Claude.ai subscription does not include API access — you need a separate free developer account.

Add prepaid credits

Go to Billing in the left sidebar and add at least $5 in credits. The API won't work until you do this. Credits are valid for one year and cover hundreds of weekly summaries.

Create your API key

Click API Keys in the sidebar, then + Create Key. Name it "Opal" and copy it immediately — it's shown only once.

Enter it in Opal

Open Opal → Settings → AI Weekly Summary → paste your key and select Claude as the provider.

A weekly summary costs roughly $0.001–$0.005 with Claude Haiku. Your $5 credit covers hundreds of summaries.

Open Google AI Studio

Go to aistudio.google.com and sign in with your Google account. No credit card is needed for the free tier.

Get your API key

Click your profile icon in the top-right corner and select Get API key. Then click Create API key in new project.

Copy your key

Your key is generated instantly. Copy it — you won't be able to view it again. Store it somewhere safe before closing the page.

Enter it in Opal

Open Opal → Settings → AI Weekly Summary → paste your key and select Gemini as the provider.

The free tier covers generous daily limits — more than enough for weekly summaries. Note: free tier is unavailable in EU/EEA/UK regions due to local regulations.

Create an OpenAI account

Go to platform.openai.com, click Sign up, and verify your email and phone number.

Go to Settings → Billing and add at least $5 in prepaid credits. The API won't work without a funded balance.

Visit platform.openai.com/api-keys, click Create new secret key, name it "Opal", and copy it immediately.

Open Opal → Settings → AI Weekly Summary → paste your key and select ChatGPT as the provider.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my iPhone supports Apple Intelligence?

Apple Intelligence requires an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or any iPhone 16 model, running iOS 18.1 or later, with the device and Siri language set to English. To check, go to Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri. If the toggle appears, your device is compatible.

Is my API key stored securely?

Yes. Your API key is stored in iOS Keychain — the same encrypted storage used for passwords and banking apps. It is never sent to Opal's servers. When you generate a summary, your device communicates directly with the AI provider.

Which provider gives the best summaries?

All four options produce great summaries. Apple Intelligence is the most private and costs nothing. Claude Haiku tends to produce the most natural, reflective writing. Gemini Flash is fast and free. GPT-4o mini offers a solid balance of quality and reliability. Try them and switch anytime in Settings.

Will my diary entries be used to train AI models?

Apple Intelligence runs entirely on-device, so your entries never leave your phone. For the API providers — Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI — none of them use API data to train their models by default. Refer to each provider's API data usage policy for the latest details.

How much does it actually cost to use an API key?

Very little. A typical week of diary entries is around 2,000–5,000 words. Summarising this with Claude Haiku or GPT-4o mini costs roughly $0.001–$0.005 per summary. Even generating a summary every week for a full year costs less than $0.30. Your initial $5 credit covers years of use.

Can I switch providers later?

Absolutely. You can update your provider or API key at any time in Opal's Settings. There's no lock-in — try different providers and switch whenever you like.
